Photo courtesy of Kenan-FlaglerOver the last three years, Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has rejected almost 50% of all applicants ââ¬â and school administrators havent liked doing it. As part of a plan to accept more talent into the ranks of its two-year program, the school is in the final stages of approving a business school-specific fee. If the new proposal passes, starting next fall, business majors at UNC will pay a $2,000-per-year fee on top of their tuition, while business minors will pay $1,000 per year, with a four-semester cap on the fee.ââ¬Å"Our peer public business schools all have similar business school-specific fees or incremental tuition,â⬠says Dougl as Shackelford, dean of the Kenan-Flagler School. ââ¬Å"We are late to the game.â⬠Indeed, many other top schools already have similar fees in place for business majors. Students at Arizona State Universityââ¬â¢s W. P. Carey School of Business, for example, pay $1,050 per year in program fees over the course of their undergraduate studies. At Georgia Techââ¬â¢s Scheller School, students pay whats called an Institute Specific Fee of $544 per semester, or $1,088 per year. Undergrad business majors at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvaniaââ¬â¢s currently pay $5,120 in fees on top of their tuition over the course of their studies, while students at New York Universityââ¬â¢s Stern School of Business pay $3,616 in fees for their undergraduate business education.à Right now the total cost of attending Kenan-Flagler while living on campus is $23,734 a year for North Carolina residents. Out of the PoetsQuants Top Undergraduate Business Schools of 2017, Kenan -Flagler had the ninth lowest cost out of the 82 schools ranked for in-state residents. Indiana Universitys Kelley School of Business was the only other top 10 school with a lower total cost of attendance.Dean Doug Shackelford. Kenan-Flagler photoUNDERGRAD POPULATION TO INCREASE FROM 400 TO 600 PER CLASSShackelford says school administrators have been brainstorming ways to expand the undergraduate program for past last five years when they recognized that many students were being dissuaded from applying to the undergraduate business program due to the low admit rate. Between 2013 and 2017, the school even saw an 11% increase in application volume. As a two-year program, students already enrolled at UNC apply to the program during their sophomore year. The school began the fee approval process in the summer of 2016, and will put it to a final board vote next month (March 2018), where it needs the majority of 28 members approval to pass. With the increased funding from the fees potenti ally starting in 2018, the school hopes to turn down fewer high-achieving students with high GPA and SAT scores. They currently have about 350 business majors and 50 minors and the fee will be used for staff and student support.ââ¬Å"Over the next eight years, we plan to expand the program by 50%,â⬠Shackelford explains. ââ¬Å"With a gradual increase from 400 majors and minors to 600 per class, we need more educators and administrators to support the students better.â⬠With this planned expansion, the dean adds that there are plans for a new building for the business school as well and they are in the midst of capital building and fundraising.INCREASED OUTREACH TO FRESHMEN COMING FROM A DISADVANTAGED BACKGROUNDIn order to get to this stage of the fee approval, Dean Shackelford says the school has held multiple meetings with current students, alumni, parents of students, the staff, and the schoolââ¬â¢s board of trustees. He says that he believes the fee will not deter s tudents from applying, rather, the school community is preparing for an increase in application volume. However, if passed, the school will waive the fee for students receiving financial aid. Currently, about 25% of undergrads at Kenan-Flagler receive financial aid. With the expansion proposal, the school forecasts a growth to 35%. According to school numbers, 15% of students at Kenan-Flagler identify as an underrepresented minority and 9% are first-generation college students. With this fee proposal, the school also plans to increase outreach to incoming freshmen from disadvantaged high schools to assist in application prep before their second year. ââ¬Å"The studentsââ¬â¢ performances as freshmen weigh heavily and students that come from an advantageous high school have lots of AP (advanced placement) credits,â⬠Shackelford says. ââ¬Å"If they come from a disadvantaged background, they may need to do remedial work instead of jumping into advanced courses. We plan to begi n identifying disadvantaged freshmen who are interested in business to help them step forward.â⬠ADDED USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND VIRTUAL REALITY ON THE WAYOn top of handing out more undergraduate business degrees, Kenan-Flagler also plans to use funds from the fees to provide more global opportunities and student support services like leadership programming and career coaching. To continue providing the bigger class with a top-notch education, the dean says that the school is also planning to beef up the use of emerging technology. Students joining the school can expect to learn and use more artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies during their time at the school. Dean Shackelford, who is a graduate of the UNC Kenan-Flagler undergraduate business program himself, says that one of the hardest days of the year is when they release decisions and have to disappoint so many students and their families. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s heartbreaking to turn away so many tal ented, qualified students,â⬠he says.DONT MISS: AT KENAN-FLAGLER, A BIG SWIG OF AWARENESS or B-SCHOOL: WHAT IT COSTS AND WHAT GRADUATES MAKE Page 1 of 11

The Unnamed Wife in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Essay
The Unnamed Wife in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight the green knightââ¬â¢s wife plays a pivotal role in the story. Yet, she is never given a name and it is unclear what motivates her actions. She could simply be following her husbandââ¬â¢s orders to seduce this visiting knight. She could be under the tutelage of Morgan le Fay. Or she may be acting under her own guidance and using her sexuality to carry out her own desires or gain power. In light of this uncertainty, the unnamed wifeââ¬â¢s role in the bedroom scene is also hard to decipher. As a woman she should be submissive, and yet it is Gawain who is forced to defend himself against her advances to which he eventually submits. The multiple readings ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦She also refers to Gawain as, ââ¬Å"my captive knightâ⬠. This suggests that Gawain is in the submissive position, which is not typically how a powerful, male knight is perceived. Oddly enough, this is the case in medieval society. The lord is the master and the knight pledges loyalty to the lord and his lady. In this sense the knight is actually in a lower social position than the lady, and this problemitizes the typical gender roles. For instance, Gawain must tell the wife, ââ¬Å"I am yours to command, to kiss when you pleaseâ⬠in order to live up to the expectations of a courteous knight. His social role as a knight causes him to submit to this cunning woman. The lady is able to exert control over Gawain while still appearing submissive, because of Gawainââ¬â¢s conflicting social and gender roles. However, the gender roles and power relations between the wife and Gawain are further complicated when considering the wifeââ¬â¢s loyalty to her husband. If she is merely following his orders and offering her body to whom ever he commands, then she is undoubtedly submissive. Clearly the wifeââ¬â¢s actions are in line with her husbandââ¬â¢s plans. In the end he tells Gawain, ââ¬Å"And the wooing of my wifeââ¬âit was all my scheme!â⬠Despite this fact, it is uncertain wheatear the wife is forced to joinShow MoreRelated Essay on Games in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight1328 Words à |à 6 PagesGames in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight à à à Many games are involved in the plot of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Adaption Means Survival in Elie Wiesels Night and...
Charles Darwin, the famous evolutionist, once wrote: In the struggle for survival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their environment.â⬠It was this message that Elie Wiesel learned during his captivity in World War II and incorporated into his novel, ââ¬ËNightââ¬â¢. It was also this message that William Golding tried to express through the scenario of his magnum opus, ââ¬ËLord of the Fliesââ¬â¢. Though, in both their novels, there was another message, an idea first realized by the great psychologist and philosopher Sigmund Freud. The idea was that when man is taken away from civilization, his instincts (the id) will overpower his conscience (super-ego) and man will return to theirâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The first of the 2 novels is Night, in this novel; it is often shown through-out the book that in times of need, people are willing to turn on one another. By seeing how Eliezerââ¬â¢s vie ws about his father changed in the novel, it is proven that Eliezer began to focus more on surviving and desires than some of the important things like family thus proving that the evil change that Eliezer went was in fact nothing more than him falling back onto his more primitive beliefs of focusing on living by instinct and desire. The first of the two quotes to prove that is here: ââ¬Å"He slapped my father with such force that he fell down and then crawled back to his place on all fours. I stood petrified. What had happened to me? My father had just been struck, in front of me, and I had not even blinked. I had watched and kept silent. Only yesterday, I would have dug my nails into this criminalââ¬â¢s flesh. Had I changed so much?â⬠(Wiesel 39) This quote is from Eliezerââ¬â¢s first moments in Auschwitz. And from this quote, we know that it also marks the beginning of Eliezerââ¬â¢s steadily decreasing lack of sympathy for others for he had already began his descent to using his primitive instincts. This quote though, is extremely enlightening when compared to the thesis. This would be because this quote illustrates the fact that Eliezer
Comparison of Vultures and Not my Business Essay Example For Students
Comparison of Vultures and Not my Business Essay In the poem vultures the poet talks about how strange it is that love can exist in places we never thought possible. In the poem Not My Business the narrator describes how various people in his village are mistreated he is not affected by this until they come for him. Both poems are written by Nigerian poets and are set in Africa. However in both case Africa is merely a place and this even could occur anywhere. Likewise both poems protest how humans beings treat each other, but they d this in different ways using different techniques such as structure, vocabulary and poetic devices. The poem vultures is written in free verse and consists of mostly short lines this was done so we read the poem slowly therefore appreciating its dark gloomy atmosphere. The poem not my business is split into four different stanzas each one specially written for each occurrence. At the end of each stanza there is a refrain this repetition is used to show that it is an instinctive response he doesnt want to think about it. The last there isnt the usually words its his turn. His voice has been silenced. The poets shows that turning a blind an eye will not make a problem go away and just because something doesnt affect you should do anything about it. Simile is used to emphasize the brutality his friends go through Beating him softly like clay. This shows how violent the beating is which makes us imagine Akanni as a puppet with no feelings or emotions which is quite the opposite as her is a human just like me or you. The fact the narrator chooses to tells us his friends name makes us feel close to him and when we hear that he has been brutally beaten makes us resent the narrator for just standing back and watching. During the poem the jeep is likened to a wild animal the jeep was waiting in my bewildered lawn. The personification of the lawn shows how the narrator is frightened and confused. The fourth stanza is different. In this instance, the Jeep has turned up at the house of the narrator; it is his or her turn to be dragged away. The repeated lines from the previous stanzas cannot feature now as there is, apparently, no one left to observe the injustice. The only reaction here is that of the lawn, which is personified as bewildered. In the fourth section of Vultures, the poet again uses metaphors: the evil Commandant is an ogre (line 43) with merely a spark of love a tiny glow-worm tenderness (line 44) in the icy caverns of a cruel heart (line 46). These are fairly clichi d images, perhaps because Achebe wanted to suggest that what he is describing is nothing new: there will always be love and evil in the world. Both poems protest how human being treat each other. Vultures its about good and evil living side by side inside of one person. Why does the world see one person as either good or bad? Such as the reference to the German Commandant who gassed people by day in the concentration camps and then stopped for chocolate for his child on the way home. I think this poem shows that good and bad resides inside every person, and that they can surprise you. In Not my business the poet and the narrator voices are different. He has used an argument with which he does not agree, to make his readers create their own argument against it; thus, we agree with him by disagreeing with the point of view he has shown us.

What Is Convection Essays - Meteorology, Continuum Mechanics
What Is Convection ? Convection is the heat transfer in a gas or liquid by the circulation of currents from one region to another or convection can also be defined as a flu i d motion caused by an external force of gravity. Convection is heat transfer by circulating currents of air as in 'THERMALS' in the atmosphere. Heated air has a lower density than cool air and therefore rises. Cooler air moves in below the rising warm air and circulatory currents are set up. Thermals are used by Hang-gliders and Para-gliders to gain lift. Convection is also used in space heating as in the home. Radiation is due to rays of direct heat as from the sun or an open fire . It is the phys ical movement of warm air (or other fluid) into an area of cooler air (or other fluid). Normally the movement is vertical as the horizontal movement is called advection. Significant evidence can be found in many places in the natural world. The first one that comes to mind is the development of cumulonimbus clouds. Warm, moist air flow upwards because it is more buoyant than the surrounding air. As it moves upwards it cools as it expands and eventually forms clouds. Another example would be the convective cells found in hot springs. The hot water is less dense and rises, sometimes quite vigorously, producing a lot of turbulence at the surface.

Eassy on a Poem Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Eassy on a Poem - Essay Example This can be demonstrated through an examination of subject and word choice in Theodore Roethkeââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"My Papaââ¬â¢s Waltz.â⬠In the poem, the poet presents what first appears to be an innocent story about a young boy enjoying a moment of bliss with his father as the two of them dance about the room just before bedtime. Roethke begins by talking about how waltzing like this with his dad is not easy, bringing to mind the half-remembered days of standing on the tops of a fatherââ¬â¢s shoes as he clumsily danced about the room with an additional several-poundsââ¬â¢ child standing on his toes and clinging about his upper thighs: ââ¬Å"The whiskey on your breath / Could make a small boy dizzy; / But I hung on like death: / Such waltzing was not easyâ⬠(1-4). That the dancing is exuberant is illustrated in the second stanza as Roethke mentions how they ââ¬Å"romped until the pan / Slid from the kitchen shelfâ⬠(6). Their closeness, already hinted at by the boy becoming dizzy in the fog of his fatherââ¬â¢s whisky breath, is again encountered in the third stanza as man and boy hold hands and à ¢â¬Å"At every step you missed / My right ear scraped a knuckleâ⬠(11-12). Finally, the poem ends as the boy is waltzed off to bed with the readerââ¬â¢s imagination finishing the dance in a flourish, swinging the boy around in the air until his clinging hands come loose and he lands squarely in the center of a soft mattress and comfortable sheets. However, as the poem is read through, the reader is left with an uneasy sense of things being not quite right, as if there is something much more sinister occurring within the lines of the poem than this surface impression reveals. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that this sinister element emerges as a result of the specific words Roethke uses to build his imagery. He talks about how the boy ââ¬Å"hung on like deathâ⬠(3) and
